I've been wanting to do a Coney Island blog post for quite some time - it's one of my favorite spots in NY! I LOVE that it is so far removed from the typical "hustle" of the city - as it's located at the veryyyy bottom of Brooklyn. The subway ride is pretty long, but if you're in great company - it goes by pretty quickly! ;) I made quite a few trips out there this summer with my fellow color-hunting friend Ruth (@bigntoasty). I took soooooo many photos each time I went, and I am finally gettin' my shit together to compile them all into a cohesive post!
I love Coney Island because it is FILLED with a bajillion colorful photo ops.. literally every corner you turn, a colorful wall can be found! (You don't have to look or try very hard, haha). You can also people-watch for an entire day there, and never get bored.. the people are SO fascinating and seem to come from all over the place. AAAAAND, it doesn't hurt that it's the place Beyonce filmed her XO music video... #fangirlmoment
I had a ton of fun buying candy from one of the candy shops in the area (there are several) and using them as props for my photos! My favorite piece of candy to play with was by far the giant rainbow swirly lollipop that was basically the size of my head, haha.
I was too cheap / poor to buy an amusement park pass - so I didn't play any of the bigger games or ride any of the rides LOL. However, there was a "play til you win" claw machine that dispensed rubber ducks... and I won a unicorn duck on my second "try." It was pretty great, and I felt pretty proud of myself (lol) .... even though it was a "play til you win" game... I wasn't expecting to get a "good" one out of it, haha!
This summer, they also had an exclusive series of commissioned murals on display in collaboration with Smorgasburg. I was super excited about this because quite a few of my favorite street art artists (Maya Hayuk, Jason Woodside, Ben Eine, Buff Monster, etc.) had contributed to the project, and it was great to see all of their work in one place!
And of course, when in Coney Island - you MUST make a stop at the original Nathan's! ;) ... because, #obligatory
Hoping you all enjoyed my inside look at Coney Island! I think the best part about this place is that it is such an unconventional "NY" experience. Whether you are a native New Yorker or just visiting - it is a colorful escape from the typical "concrete jungle" - and an explosively fun place to explore! :)
