One of the best parts about the 4th of July is the FOOD! I looooove making all sorts of red / white / and blue noms around this time of year, and this year I decided to concoct a "star spangled" RWB smoothie to go along with my DIY drink pinwheels! If you've been following along, you already know that I'm a liiiiiittle bit of a smoothie addict during summer. ;)
Originally, I intended for this guy to have 3 distinct layers... but when I tried pouring the layers, it gave me a bit more of a marbled look than a defined 3-layer drink. This probably has to do with the varying consistencies.. and the fact that I haven't perfected the consistency of each layer, but I actually don't mind the marbled look. I also forgot to freeze my fruit the night before, so granted my layers were probably a bit more watery / thin than preferable. Even though it didn't turn out looking quite as I had planned, it was still delicious!
WHAT YOU NEED:
RED:
- 1/3 cup strawberries (preferably chilled or frozen)
- 1/2 cup banana (approx. 7 slices, preferably frozen)
- 1-2 ice cubes / splash of water
WHITE:
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut flakes
- 1/2 cup banana (approx. 7 slices, preferably frozen)
- 1-2 ice cubes / splash of water
BLUE:
- 1/3 cup blueberries
- 1/2 cup banana (approx. 7 slices, preferably frozen)
- 1-2 ice cubes / splash of water
- 1-2 strawberries (preferably chilled or frozen) (optional, to deepen the blue color)
I was using a 16 oz. glass for my smoothie -- and originally I had more blueberries and strawberries in the mix. It ended up being too much, so hopefully these altered proportions are more accurate. You may have to adjust some of the amounts on your own in order to make it fit whatever sized glass you are using!
WHAT TO DO:
First, I combined the blue layer in my blender (you could also start off with red if you'd like). After pouring the first layer into your glass, rinse out your blender and combine the white layer. You might have to scrape down the blender a few times with this layer -- I found that it was most difficult to get a smooth consistency with because of the (already shredded) coconut. Pour the white layer on top of your first layer. Last, I combined the red layer and poured that on top. Sprinkle coconut flakes and a couple blueberries on the top layer. Garnish the rim with a slice of strawberry and a drink pinwheel, and enjoy! :)
TIPS & THINGS TO TRY:
- Cut up and freeze fruit ahead of time. Thaw 15-20 minutes before throwing into blender.
- Try using coconut water or milk instead of regular water to help emulsify the fruit. I didn't get a chance to try this myself, but I think it would work out great with these flavor combos!
- If you're feeling indulgent, sub in whipped cream entirely for the white layer! (fattening, but it's a holiday SOOOOO #treatyoself !!
Wishing you all a happy and safe 4th of July! Don't do anything I wouldn't do! ;)
